The measuring system uses a coordinates measuring device with a video camera (6) and a mechanical sensor head (7) with a sensor contacting the workpiece surface. The part of the workpiece surface scanned by the sensor is visually examined via a monitor (10) coupled to the camera. Pref. the measuring device is used to scan a master workpiece under control of the video monitor image. The scanned coordinates are stored in a memory and used for automatic control of the mechanical sensor during scanning of the measured workpiece. ADVANTAGE - Increased accuracy for mechanical scanning.
