The drive motor is a 3-phase motor supplied by an inverter (2) fed by a DC battery. The charge condition detector (5) transmits a signal to a control part (3), if the charge condition of the battery (4) exceeds a predetermined level so that the charging current to the battery is reduced. It is possible with this reduced current, the power supplied to the AC motor is not sufficient to produce a required braking torque. In this event the control part (3) switches on an electrical load (9) to raise the braking torque. If a further load absorption is required, the control part switches on the electrical braking unit, which includes a switch (81) and a resistance (82). ADVANTAGE - Charging current to battery is controlled on basis of charge condition of battery, so that overcharge of battery is prevented.
