Fuel gas is recovered from waste and abandoned coal mines by introducing the waste into a coal mine which is tightly sealed by a lock system and which serves as a reaction space, in which reaction of the waste with mine coal (dust) and water is activated to form fuel gas. A lock system, esp for carrying out the above process, has one or more conical lock elements (15,16) which are operated by an opening and closing mechanism and which are located in a lock shaft (14) formed in a steel-reinforced concrete core (13) in the mine entrance region, the or each lock element (15,16) sealing on an abutment (18,19). ADVANTAGE - The process produces a high grade fuel gas esp from domestic waste and the residual coal content of abandoned coal mines.
