The solenoid operated valve for a fuel injection system has a valve-stem (27) and set (40, 41) such that its axial motion within the housing (31) enables a closure or alternatively a connection between the high pressure (36) and low-pressure ports of a reciprocating fuel feedpump (not shown) and cylinder indexing sensor. The closure is initiated by the attraction of a disc armature (26) against a compression spring (28) by the magnetic core (25a) when the coil (25b) is energised. De-energisation of the coil (25b) results in equalisation of the pressure due to the coupling of the ports (33, 36) and fuel injection ceases with return of the stem (27) and disc (26) subject to secondary regulation via the stop (29) and spring (30). ADVANTAGE - Has improved speed of response and requires smaller solenoid compared with alternative systems offering high pressure fuel injection.
