Treatment of rice plants or rice plant growth materials (esp. seeds) to provide long term protection against insect attack after planting, comprises applying a systemic insecticide (I) with long term effect, i.e. effective in the growing plant after germination. Also claimed are (i) long term protection of rice grains or seeds against insect attack, by applying (I); (ii) aq. formulations for the above treatment, contg. (I) with water solubility below 100 (esp. below 10) ppm.; (iii) rice seeds impregnated with (I); (iv) quantities of rice grains (e.g. in sacks) impregnated with or immersed in aq. formulations (ii); (v) rice seed planting kits including a rice grain culture substrate and an aq. formulation (ii); and (vi) a rice culture process including (I) treatment. Pref. (I) is a 1-phenyl-3-cyano-pyrazole deriv. of formula (I'), X is halogen or, in the 4-position, 1-4C alkyl (opt. substd. by one or more halogen, pref. F, Cl or Br); R4 = 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkenyl or 2-4C alkynyl (all opt. substd. by one or more halogen, pref. F, Cl or Br); R5 = H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl (opt. substd. as in X), 2-5C alkoxymethylene-amino (opt. substd. on the methylene by 1-4C alkyl), R8S(O)n or NR6R7; R6, R7 = H, CHO or (all with up to 5C), alkyl, alkenylalkyl (sic), alkynylalkyl (sic), alkanoyl, haloalkanoyl, alkoxycarbonyl or haloalkoxycarbonyl (where halo substits. are as for alkyl in X) or NR6R7 = 5-6 membered cyclic imide gp.; R8 = as R4; n = 0-2; p = 1-5 (pref. 1-3, esp. 3). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are insecticides, effective against e.g. Chilo spp. (stem borer), Nilparvata lugens (plant hoppers) and Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus. They are also active against other pests e.g. Hydrellia philippina and the nematode Aphelencoides besseyi. By planting (I) treated rice seeds, effective long-term protection of rice plants is obtd. by use of systemic insecticides, without the water pollution problems or destruction of useful species associated with application of insecticides to paddy fields.
