PURPOSE: To provide a nonlinear optical waveguide element which is easily and precisely formed as designed with most adequately designed waveguide shapes and is capable of efficiently confining light and, therefore, of efficiently developing quadratic and cubic nonlinear optical effects. ;CONSTITUTION: This nonlinear optical material contains a compd. which exhibits a photochromic property and has a nonlinear optical characteristic in its photoisomerization state in the thin film 3. This nonlinear optical waveguide element consists of the photoisomerization state distribution patterns of the photochromic compd. of the thin film formed by using the nonlinear optical material as nonlinear optical waveguides 5. This method for formation of the nonlinear optical waveguide element comprises irradiating the nonlinear optical material with light which photoisomerizes the photochromic compd., thereby forming the irradiated parts of the thin film to the nonlinear optical waveguides.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
