PURPOSE:To transmit a wide television signal with a high picture quality while compatibility is held with a conventional television signal. CONSTITUTION:A signal generated from a successive scanning wide television signal source 101 is letter box-converted by a 4-3 converter 103. Then, a main picture component one field before whose level of correlation seems to be high generated by using a field memory 116 is subtracted from an animation reinforcement signal outputted from a succession/jumping converter 111 by subtracter 112, so that a signal component is decreased, and a signal can be multiplexed on the upper and lower black parts and transmitted. At a reception side, the signal is received, and the main picture component whose level of correlation is high is added, so that the animation reinforcement signal is reproduced, and the original successive scanning wide television signal can be reproduced and displayed.
