PURPOSE: To obtain a detection device capable of detecting a shell breaking tip position when the shell breaking of restraining break-out is generated in a mold, in a continuous casting device. ;CONSTITUTION: The device is provided with a shell breaking detection device 5 to detect shell breaking from the condition of varying temp. of plural temp. sensors 1, 2, 3, 4, which are arranged at up/down two stages at least in the drawing direction and in two rows in the horizontal direction and a calculating means 6 to calculate a shell breaking tip position from the condition of the varying temp. detected by plural temp. sensors, when the shell breaking means detect shell breaking. By precisely detecting the shell breaking tip position, shell is formed at the shell breaking place by lowering casting speed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
