In a process of treating waste materials for an anaerobicdigestion of the biogenic organic constituents of the garbage,particularly of the source separated organic waste, the non-recycable fraction of the domestic waste, the residual waste andthe commercial wastes, an easily dewaterable suspension of thebiogenic organic substances is formed in a pretreating stage bya mechanical treatment including a selective dissolution anddefibration of the biogenic organic substances. In dependence onthe adjusted solids concentration the action of flow-dynamicalforces is so controlled that the not biogenic organicsubstances, are not subjected to an appreciable disintegrationbefore they are removed at the end of the pretreatment. Non-digestable substances are removed. The suspension is convertedto biogas by an anaerobic digestion and to a compost-likeresidue. In the apparatus in accordance with the invention agentle treatment of adhering solids in the crude waste isensured in the pretreating stage in that the speed of theimpeller 14 in the pulping vessel 13 is controlled in dependenceon the solids concentration. This will also result in a distinctsaving of energy and in a high efficiency.
