Nozzles 2 located predominantly below bath surface, predominantly in the furnace bottom, are used to feed gases, predominantly oxidizing ones, and solids, in particular carbon bearing fuels, are fed in the smelt through one or several hollow electrodes, lined with wear-resistant material.
