Sterilising steam is fed to the waste container and is further sucked away. The steam sucked out of the container interior is fed to the heating system of the steam producer (5). The feed water fed to the steam producer for producing steam is preheated for degassing purposes. After the filling and germtight closure of the waste container (2), the air located inside it is sucked away. In a following stage, the sterilising steam is introduced into the container interior and at time intervals the steam is sucked away and fresh steam is fed in. The suction conduit (9) connected with the waste container (2) issues in the heating system of the steam producer.
