PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure the concentration of calcium in a sound cell through an optical measuring system according to a specific formula. SOLUTION: A cell is treated with sufficient quantity of tetracarboxy compound so that it acts as an optical indicator. A compound as shown by a formula is employed (in the formula, R represents hydrogen or acetoxymethyl, Ri represents methyl or ethyl, Z represents oxygen, sulfur or NH, and Y represents NH or sulfur). When R is hydrogen, the cell is treated with sodium, potassium or lithium hydride so that it acts as an optical indicator. This optical indicator can be applied to wider range of machine as compared with a conventional one.
