PURPOSE: To obtain a method for stably discharging a liquefaction residue even when the ash concentration and discharge amount thereof fluctuate by continuously measuring the viscosity thereof and the ash concentration thereof, which affects coaking, and keeping the flowability of the residue constant based on the results of the measurements. ;CONSTITUTION: A liquefaction residue fractionated in a vacuum distillation column 1 in a coal liquefaction process is discharged from the column 1, during which the residue is irradiated with two or more radiations emitted by irradiators 3a and 3b. The interactions between the radiations are continuously detected to estimate the ash concentration and/or discharge amount of the residue. When the estimated ash concentration value is too high or too low, the temp. of the column 1 is regulated to be reduced or increased, respectively.
