In order to release suddenly a gas, which has been stored for a long period at high pressure in a container, to blow up an inflatable bag of a vehicle-occupant restraint system, the invention calls for a stopper (26) made of pre-stressed glass to be located upstream of the outlet hole (66) of the container (60). A sealing film rests against the end of the stopper (26) nearest to the inside of the container. The far end of the stopper has a finger-like projection (26a) extending out at right angles to the stopper. If this finger (26a) is broken off by a vehicle-sensitive mass (70), the material structure of the stopper (26) is broken down so that the stopper breaks up spontaneously into a powder and frees the outlet hole (66).
