PURPOSE: To provide a lens system design method and device which can fast design a lens system with the minimum computational amount. ;CONSTITUTION: This lens system design method locally changes the value of plural component elements so that a lens system shown by these component elements has the desired characteristics and acquires the optimum component elements. In the design system, a process S6 is prepared to calculate the eigenvalue of a matrix product A'TA' between a partial matrix A' which defines the column vector a1 (i=1...n) of Jacobian A using the changed variable of each characteristics as its element against the minute change of the component element value as the basis of the matrix A' and the transpose of the matrix A', together with the processes S7 and S4 where the component element corresponding to the inter-eigenvalue product is deleted out of the lens system Wwhen the absolute value of the inter-eigenvalue product is smaller than the prescribed value to each calculated product A'TA' and then a new lens system is generated, and a process 8 where the value of plural component elements are locally changed so that the new lens system has the desired characteristics and that the optimum component elements are acquired.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
