PURPOSE:To enable to reasonably produce the fullerene C60 by subjecting a petroleum pitch by-produced by the thermal catalytic cracking of a desulfurized vacuum light oil to a specific treatment to separate the fullerene C60, and subsequently sublimating the separated fullerene C60 at a high temperature under a high vacuum. CONSTITUTION:An n-heptane extraction component (H), a benzene extraction component (B) obtained from the insolubles from which the component H is removed, a quinoline extraction component (Qs) obtained from the insolubles from which the component B is removed, and the insoluble component (Qi) from which the component Qs is removed are defined. A 460-560 deg.C distillation fraction obtained by vacuum-distilling a petroleum pitch of raw material and subsequently cutting 85% of the distillation fraction is extracted with a 6-8C aliphatic hydrocarbon to obtain 99.0-100.0% of the component H having an average mol.wt. of 310-360. The component is prelimiriarily treated with an inert gas flow under a pressure of 20-400kg/cm2 at 300-600 deg.C to obtain the stable component H having a benzene nucleus and a naphthalene nucleus. The three molecules of the component H are thermally bound to each other to obtain a further stable component H. The further stable component H is baked under an inert gas, and the baked pitch is extracted with methanol and tetrahydrofuran. The extract is allowed to pass the silica gel separation column of octadecylsilane to sublime the fullerene C60.
