The prodn. of a catalyst component (A) for (co)polymerisation of ethylene and 1-olefins to ultra-high-mol. wt. ethylene homo- and copolymers (UHMW-PE) comprises: (a) reacting a Mg cpd. of formula R1-Mg-R2 (I) with a halogenating agent of formula Xn-C-R3 (ii) to give a catalyst support of formula X-Mg-X (III), (b) reacting (III) with a hydrocarbon-soluble Ti cpd. of formula R4m-Ti-R54-m (IV) in inert hydrocarbon at 0-100 degrees C., in a mole ratio of Ti:Mg = 0.01-1, with 0.01-1 mole/mole (I) of an electron donor (V) present in (a) or (b), and then (c) precipitating the dissolved Ti cpd. onto (III) by redn. with an alkyl-Al cpd. (VI); R1-R3 = 1-20C alkyl, 5-20C cycloalkyl, 6-20C aryl or 2-20C alkenyl; R4, R5 = halo, 1-6C alkoxy or 1-20C carboxy; x = halo; n = 3; m = 0-4. Also claimed is catalyst component (A) obtd. by this process, with a mean particle size of not more than 10 microns. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of UHMW-PE by (co)polymerisation of ethylene in suspension or in the gas phase, in the presence of a mixed catalyst contg. a transition metal component (A) as obtd. by the above process and an organo-Al cpd. (component B). Also claimed is UHMW-PE obtd. by this process, with a mean particle size of 100-200 microns and a viscosity no. of at least 2000 cm3/g.
