Method for inserting a replacement pipe 22 into an existing pipeline 10, characterized by:- insertion of an approximately rigid thermoplastic pipe 22 which is in a compressed state with a reduced diameter, into the pipeline 10;- heating at least one end section 33 of the pipe 22 in order to make it deformable, followed by rounding of the end section 33 and insertion of a sliding plug 40 into the rounded end section 33, which allows a restricted passage for pressurized fluid past it through the compressed pipe 22;- fixing the sliding plug 40 and introducing a hot fluid under pressure into the end section and past the sliding plug 40 until a portion of the length of the compressed pipe 22 becomes hot and deformable; and - allowing the sliding plug 40 to move forwards at a controlled speed from the end section 33 through the pipe 22, with hot fluid under pressure continuously being introduced behind the plug 40 and past this into the pipe 22 in order to keep the latter in a hot deformable state, and to progressively change it into the rounded shape.
