The method is for increasing the stability of multi-axle mobile construction machinery, where the engine (15) drives a gearbox (6) and one or more wheels (5) through drive shafts (9) and differentials (16). At least some of the drive train elements are mechanically tensioned against play in the gearing. Between each wheel and the relevant axle is an epicyclic gearbox (22 to 25) and wheel braking is by multiple disk brakes on the axles. Each axle individually is mechanically tensioned. The tensioning is done by first releasing the brakes on one of the driven axles, followed by running the machine until the gearing play is taken up by the rotation of each unbraked wheel, and then reapplying the brakes.
