2,2, min -Bis(diphenylphosphino)-5,5 min ,6,6 min ,7,7 min ,8,8 min -octahydro-1,1 min -binaphthyl is a novel phosphine compound of formula (I): CHEM The compound is prepared by a series of reactions from a 2,2 min -dihalogeno-1,1 min -binaphthyl by catalytic hydrogenation, reaction with Mg, condensation with a diphenyl phosphinyl halide and optical resolution. The binaphthyl intermediates in this process are also novel. The compound forms a complex with a transition metal (e.g. Rh, Pd, Ru, Ir or Ni), which complexes are used as catalyst in enantioselective synthesis, e. g. of a 2(N-acylamino)methyl-3-oxobutanoic acid ester.
