PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple, sure method for mounting a security element, positioned correctly if necessary, on a base layer or a document. SOLUTION: A composite layer 7 comprising a holding layer 1 and an adhesive layer 6 which can be activated by heat is contacted with a base layer 9 such as a document and heated locally by being supplied with heat energy through the composite layer 7. After the adhesive layer being cooled, the holding layer 1 is removed from the base layer 9. The holding layer 1 is peeled off the base layer 9 at adhering locations, the composite layer 7 tears along the boundary between adhering and non-adhering locations so that only the adhering locations of the composite layer 7 remain on the base layer 9. An array of laser beams, laser diodes, or light emitting diodes is suitable for the supply of heat energy. Preferably, the composite layer 7 has diffraction structure 8 or a layer generating an optical interference effect. A pattern of fine uneven structure exhibiting a security element by the diffraction structure is transferred on the base layer 9.
