PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set various kinds of names of production control items, alarm message, diagnostic and maintenance messages, etc., so as to fit the specification of each user without needing an exclusive ROM for screen display data for each specific user. ;SOLUTION: The screen display data of fixed definition displayed on the screen are pre-stored in a nonvolatile memory 7. Character string data, such as the various kinds of names, alarm message, diagnostic and maintenance messages, set with the user and written in an external storage medium 25 are read out of the external storage medium 25. These character string data are stored rewritably into the rewritable nonvolatile memory 9 as the character string data for screen display. Then, the screen display data specified by the nonvolatile memory 7 is read out according to the screen display demand and also, the character string data for screen display specified by the nonvolatile memory 9 is read out.
