PURPOSE: To obtain tert. butyl alcohol at a high rate of conversion and a high rate of selection by bringing tert. butyl hydroperoxide feedstock into contact with a catalyst selected from among a metallic porphyrin compd., an activated metallic phthalocyanine compd., etc. ;CONSTITUTION: Feedstock contg. tert. butyl hydroperoxide obtd. by allowing isobutane to react with molecular oxygen is brought into contact with an effective amt. of a catalyst under stirring in a liq. phase to convert the tert. butyl hydroperoxide chiefly into tert. butyl alcohol. The catalyst used is selected from among 0.001-5 wt.% metallic porphyrin compd. such as iron (III) porphyrin based on the amt. of the feedstock, a soluble ruthenium catalyst compd. (0.01-5,000 ppm ruthenium in the liq. phase) activated with a bidentate ligand such as 2,2'-dipyridyl and a metallic phthalocyanine compd. activated with an amine and/or mercaptan.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO
