PURPOSE:To enhance the separation capacity of an optical isomer by using a surfactant containing optically active amino acid as an asymmetric source as a carrier. CONSTITUTION:A surfactant represented by formula I (wherein R is one org. group selected from an alkyl group, an aryl group and an aralkyl group, R2, R3 and R4 are an alkyl group or a hydrogen atom, X is a halogen atom and Y is an amino acid side chain group) is used. As the amino acid side chain group represented by Y in the formula, amino acid containing asymmetric carbon in its molecule such as alanine., valine, leucine or isoleucine is designated. By using this surfactant in electrokinetic chromatography or using the same in an optical splitting method as a carrier, an optical isomer is efficiently separated.
