An adaptive sequence decoder comprises a maximumlikelihood sequence estimator for deriving a decision sequenceof a received signal in response to a control signal. Channelestimators of zero-th to m-th order of channel impulseresponse are connected to the MLSE to produce a first signalrepresenting a respective order of a replica of a transmittedsignal and a second signal representing a respective order ofchannel impulse response. The first signals from the channelestimators are summed to produce the replica of thetransmitted signal for comparison with the received sequenceto produce an error signal, and the second signals are summedto produce the control signal. At periodic intervals, theMLSE control signal is initialized and the zero-th orderchannel estimator is reset to the initialized control signal,and the other channel estimators are reset to respectiveinitial values to prevent time dispersion.
