The invention relates to membranes and to a methodfor the separation of aromatic hydrocarbons from a mixture ofvarious aromatic hydrocarbons or from a mixture of such aro-matic hydrocarbons and non-aromatic hydrocarbons. Accordingto the invention the membrane is formed from a polymer whosebackbone comprises aromatic centres and one or more of thearomatic centres comprise polar groups.The backbone is preferably an aromatic polyetherketone.The membrane can be modified by radiation, thermaltreatment and chemical reaction or a combination of these.
