The waveguide sensor is formed on a chip package comprising at least one light source and at least one detector. Simple waveguide elements are mounted on the chip. The waveguide confinement elements can be formed integrally with the chip packages, so that simple waveguide bodies can be inserted or removed. Various geometric shapes of the light source, reference detector, and sense detector can be made.
