The present invention provides a substantially purified cell factor capable of modulating the expression of a gene encoding a protein involved in cholesterol metabolism. The present invention also provides a method for obtaining the cell factor of the present invention in a substantially purified form. The present invention further provides a method of decreasing the cholesterol concentration of the subject using the cell factor of the present invention, which comprises administering the cell factor of the present invention to a subject having hypercholesterolemia.
