2-diol (1,4) with butene-2-diol (1,4) using copper and zinc or a palladium catalyst to which silver and zinc are added as a dopant. In a preferred embodiment, by optimizing the composition of the catalyst, the activity and selectivity of the catalyst in question could be improved, while eliminating the need to treat the toxic material during the catalyst preparation process.
