Method for determining the heat transfer coefficient between the wall (1) of a vessel and a fluid (1a) contained within it is claimed, where the novelty is that, in the vessel wall (1) is a zone (3a) of cross sectional area (A), which has a higher thermal conductivity than that of the vessel material, into which a known quantity (Q) of heat is fed in a known time (t), so that the heat flux (q), is given by: q = Q/At, and the heat transfer co-efficient ( alpha ) from the zone (3a) to the fluid (1a) is given by the quotient of the heat flux (q) and the temperature difference ( DELTA T) between the zone (3a) and the fluid boundary layer adjacent to the zone (3a): alpha = q/ DELTA T Also claimed is an appts. (2) for carrying out the above method.
