A reactor reduces the concn. of hydrocarbons, nitrogen and phosphate cpds. in water by means of a combined biofilm and activated sludge system. The activated sludge in the bioreactor system is derived by feedback from a subsequent process. The novelties are that: (a) an anaerobic phosphate liberation stage (2) with a floating grains filter is integrated in the internal circulation system of an aerobic nitrification stage (3) and a de-nitrification stage (1); (b) (i) a removal assembly (8) directed to a post-process treatment assembly (5), (ii) assemblies (7) for internal circulation, and (iii) a de-gassing zone (4) with hydraulic separation of the nitrification stage growth substrate, are arranged between the nitrification and de-nitrification stages; (c) a mixing zone (6) for the incoming water, the return sludge from the post-process treatment assembly (5) and the nitrified water, are placed after the degassing zone (4).
