The stepping width control method calculates the optimum width for the echo canceller using the quotient of the estimated values of the dispersal of the input signal and the error signal. An interval counter is used for level evaluation, by counting the number of samples for which the squared norm of the input vector is above a given threshold. The threshold is defined by a fraction of the input signal peak value, for updating the estimated value for the power transmission factor.
