The plug and socket arrangement includes a plug (ST) with projecting contact pins and a socket (SD), with a receptacle for admitting part of the plug body (11) and holes for receiving the pins. The socket includes a light to electricity converter or an optical fibre (33,37), which is electrically coupled with one end of an optical fibre in the plug, via windows (19,34) in the plug body and in the receptacle. The windows are aligned when the plug is inserted in the socket. The windows are arranged in the side walls of the receptacle and plug body.
