The vacuum switch has at least one vacuum switch tube (7,8,9) for each switch pole (3,4,5) and an operating drive for opening and closing the vacuum switch tubes. The vacuum switch tube (8) for the centre pole (4) has a greater switching capacity than the vacuum switch tubes (7,9) associated with the outer poles (3,5). Pref. the vacuum switch tube has a switching capacity which is greater by between 5 and 20 % than the switching capacity of the vacuum switch tubes for the outer poles and an axial field contact system, the vacuum switch tubes of the outer poles having a radial field contact system.
