Method for determining the position of a machine component (1) within a plane of mobility, where at least three fixed datum points (9) are set up e.g. on the walls of the building; the bearings (18, 19) of the fixed points (9) from the component (1), together with the known positions of, and distances (20) between the fixed points (9), make at least one triangle in the plane of mobility. A signal processor trigonometrically determines the position (19, 22) of the component (1), by using the known positions of, and distances (20) between, the fixed points (9), and the angles (17) between the bearings (18, 19).
