The calibrator comprises an electrically heated circular radiant plate (1) with a radiating side bound to a metal honeycomb structure (2) with a multiple of hexagonal combs (20) having a depth to diameter ratio of 5:1. All these are coated with high-conductivity material. The radiating plate is surrounded by a dome-shaped hemispherical cowl (3), the inner surface of which (4) is reflective. The entire radiant unit is well insulated (6) from the ambient temperature and atmosphere in a housing (7). Beams emitted from the honeycomb structure pass through the circular opening (5) at the crown point of the cowl. This aperture should be equal in size to that of the IR measuring instrument to be calibrated or adjustable in the form of an iris.
