The detector has a radiation sensor (2) contained within a protective housing (6) in alignment with an entry window (11). A radiation transmitter (3) within the housing allows the window to be illuminated from the inside, to provide a testing function for determining the soiling level of the entry window. Preferably the radiation transmitter is mounted on the circuit board (5) for the electronic evaluation circuit, with a light conductor rod (4) directing the radiation onto the inside of the window.
