The invention proposes a therapeutic or diagnostic agent including at least one substance containing at least one nucleic acid which hybridizes with a pax9 gene or a derivative thereof. The agent proposed is suitable for use in the diagnosis and therapy of dysplasias, metaplasias and tumours of epithelial cells, particularly of multi-layer tesselated epithelium.
