In the technical field of excitation of gas discharge, especially in firing and operating dielectrically impeded discharges, the invention proposes that transient voltage pulses (A, B, A', B') be superimposed on a low-frequency fundamental a.c. voltage in order to increase the energy fed into the gas discharge and to develop a low-loss distribution function. The time position of the transient voltage pulse as power pulse for feeding energy into the plasma can be adjusted to the operating state of the gas discharge using a control system.
