Method for eradicating pests in wood, textiles or other organic materials, which are installed in the interior of a building (churches, museums, picture galleries, libraries) or in tents, bubbles etc. is claimed. The method involves treating the affected area with one or more toxic gases and/or CO2. The novelty is that the relative humidity is reduced to 65 % or less and is kept that way throughout treatment. Preferably a dehumidifier is used inside the building; alternatively part of the treatment gas is piped outside, dehumidified and then pumped back into the building through a filter that removes any impurities or chemicals that can affect the works of art etc. inside. The type of filter used depends on the gas, e.g. a solution of a calcium compound for sulphuryl fluoride, or a solution of a copper compound for carbonyl sulphide. Also claimed is an apparatus for carrying out the treatment described, consisting of a dehumidifier, a humidity sensor, a pump and pipes for carrying the gas.
