The method involves reflecting viewed television pictures from the eyes of a user viewed by a user to a detector on the television receiver. The detector converts the signals to electronic signals and filters out all but elementary point return signals. Each return from the eye is interrupted by eyelid movement and continuous signals are filtered to leave only interrupted signals. The number of interrupted signals received allows the number of viewers to be determined. An input from the television allows the channel or video programme used to be recorded with the viewer number for that period of time. The recording figures are digitised and passed to a central monitoring unit.
