The installation consists of cages, which are aligned side by side (1,2) and one above the other (1,3), to form a matrix. The cages are arranged in two parallel batteries on either side of a central space. Within this central space a mobile lift cabin (9) is arranged to move up and down and along the rows of cages on a pair of rails (10). An automatic distributor is arranged to deliver food from the central food storage tank (17), via the food elevator (18), a distribution hopper (19) and the distribution pipes (20) to the food dispenser (26) in each cage. The food dispenser takes the form of Y-shaped tubular hoppers formed in each cage as branches of a central vertical supply tube (21).
