PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for a special operation equipment and to enable low-cost implementation, by providing an update data discriminating means which outputs the kind discrimination result of data to a communication line and an updating means for system firmware that a microcomputer actuated according to the discrimination result can operate. ;SOLUTION: A tape streamer mechanism 2 is provided with the update discriminating means 7 which discriminates the kind of data read out of a cassette tape 13 and outputs the discrimination result to the communication line 23. Further, a memory 3 is equipped with the update means E4 for system firmware that the microcomputer 4 actuated according to the decision result can execute. Then, the cassette tape 13 for update is loaded in the tape streamer mechanism 2 and after the data kind is discriminated the update program read out of the cassette tape 13 for update is transferred from the tape streamer mechanism 2 to the microcomputer 4 through the communication line 23 to advance the updating process.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
