PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a halogenated compound of high purity that has not been achieved by conventional methods from an active methylene compound with reduction of by-product formation in the halogenation. ;SOLUTION: This production of a monosubstituted compound of high purity by using a reagent for electrophilic substitution reaction from an active methylene compound used as a starting material comprises adding an inhibitor that inhibits subsidiary formation of di- or more multi-substitution by-products, before or in the process of the substitution reaction. In another embodiment, when a monosubstituted compound is produced by using a reagent for the electrophilic substitution reaction from an active methylene compound as a starting material, an inhibitor that inhibits formation of di- or more multi-substituted compounds, as by-products, by the substitution reaction.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
