MODIFIED EPOXY RESIN, MODIFIED EPOXY RESIN COMPOSITION, AND PRODUCTION OF MODIFIED EPOXY RESIN

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modified epoxy resin compsn. which is excellent in work hygiene and applicability by reacting an epoxy resin having at least one epoxy group with at least one aliph. monocarboxylic acid having the number of carbon atoms specified in a specified equivalent ratio of carboxyl group to epoxy group. ;SOLUTION: An epoxy resin (e.g. a bisphenol A epoxy resin) having at least one epoxy group in the molecule is mixed with at least one aliph. monocarboxylic acid (e.g. a tall oil fatty acid) having 10-30 carbon atoms per molecule in an equivalent ratio of carboxyl group to epoxy group of 20-80%. The resultant mixture is mixed with 5ppm to 5wt.% (based on the epoxy resin) phosphorus catalyst (e.g. ethyltriphenylphosphonium bromide) and allowed to react at 80-100°C for 0.25-8hr, thus giving a resin compsn. The compsn. is dissolved in a solvent (e.g. mineral spirit) to a solid content of 30-95wt.% to give a coating compsn.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
