PURPOSE:To form the black matrix of the color filters having high accuracy and excellent light shieldability by using a black dyestuff consisting of an azo dyestuff having a specific compsn. CONSTITUTION:The azo dyestuff having the residual group expressed by a general formula I (where Ar is the residual of an arom. or heterocyclc compd., X is a hydrogen atom or halogen atom; m is =1 integer) is used as the black dyestuff forming the black matrix on a substrate for the color filters. The prescribed black matrix is formed by a known printing method using this black dyestuff. This azo black dyestuff does not hinder the photosetting property of a photosensitive resin even when compounded therewith; even more, the black dyestuff withstands a heat treatment and, therefore, the color filter having the excellent heat resistance and weatherability at the time of use is obtd.
