A cellular access network and position updating mechanism in a wireless data traffic system in a cellular access network 1, which is connected to more than one core network 2, 3, 4, 5, which all have different position areas. In a cell the characteristics of all the position areas to which the respective cell belongs are sent together. A subscriber terminal MS sends only one position updating message to the radio access network, independent of how many position areas of core networks 2, 3, 4, 5, are changed at the same time, when there is movement from one cell to another. The network 1 defines the core network and the position areas which the updating position concerns on the basis of the information in the position updating message, and sends a position updating message separately to each defined core network giving the new position area of the subscriber and the subscriber apparatus.
