To each identity code is added a holder code which is also fed into the computer system (6.1). On checking a passport or travel authorisation (4.i) the identity code of the document in question is fed into the computer system and the specific holder code for the document is also fed by the document holder into the computer system. The computer system selects on the basis of the fed-in identity code of the document to be checked the holder code added to the identity code. The added holder code is compared with the fed-in holder code in order to establish whether the passport or travel authorisation is genuine or false.
