The new steel converter has a closure, especially of the slide valve type, on its melt tapping channel. The novel feature is an inlet basin (9) for the tapping channel (4), which is built into the converter wall (3), near the opening (8). The basin cross section (a), is greater than that (b) of the channel, and smaller than that (c) of the converter. In the tapping position of the converter (1), above the closure (6) a storage region is formed for the melt. The side surfaces (10) of the basin, make a transition into the base, where the opening is located.
