A highly active recombinant C-type infectious virus (HCV) protease is provided.;The proteases are synthesized in the form of a fusion protein in which the HCV helicase site is removed and the amino terminus of NS3 is directly bonded to NS4A.;In addition, there is provided a method for detecting an inhibitor of proteases by using an artificial transcriptional activator in which HCV flotiase and its substrate portion are added between a DNA binding site and a transcriptional activation site.;Also provided are plasmid pTHENDS3deltaC-NS4A from which the proteases can be produced and the plasmid pCEB4 used in the process.
